How Creators Use QR Codes on Merch and Packaging to Drive Traffic

Merch is a physical object with a limited window to say something before it ends up in a drawer. A QR code on the tag or packaging is one of the few ways to turn that purchase into an ongoing digital connection.

Where to place it

Hang tags and the inside of packaging (not the outside, which gets discarded) tend to perform best, since the customer sees them during the unboxing moment when attention is highest.

What to link to

  • A thank-you page with behind-the-scenes content, not just another product page
  • Exclusive content or a discount for a future purchase to reward the scan
  • A newsletter or community sign-up to keep the relationship going past the purchase

Measuring impact

Since merch scans happen well after the sale, a static image code tells you nothing. A dynamic, tracked QR code shows scan volume and timing after the fact, so you can see whether packaging placement actually drove post-purchase engagement or if the code went unnoticed.
